The Paeds Basic Course

The Paeds Basic Course continues to expand its impact in the Caribbean

At DevelopingEM 2013 Elena Cavazzoni, a paediatric intensivist from Sydney, and one of our wonderful faculty, had a casual conversation with Lisa Charles from St Lucia about whether the Paeds BASIC course might be a useful training system for the region.

Within 12 months the course had been taken to St Lucia, Trinidad and Barbados and there are plans to return to the region very soon.

Over 100 doctors and nurses have attended the course which is provided by Elena and an incredible team of intensivists from around Australia.

It is amazing and humbling to think that because of DevelopingEM connections between two geographically remote regions have been forged and quality education delivered. Truly incredible.

NAEMSP Medical Direction Overview Course added to DEM 2015

This year DevelopingEM teams with the National Association of EMS Physicians to provide a preconference workshop in EMS Medical Direction. This interactive course focuses on EMS in the real world and serves to enhance physicians’ expertise in EMS issues. Participants will receive a foundation upon which to function effectively as an EMS medical director, receive specific management tools that may be of use in their local EMS system, initiate dialogue with other EMS physicians to allow future networking, and develop an understanding of how EMS functions within the broader emergency care system. Brent Myers, the President-Elect of NAEMSP, is joined by Jose Cabanas and Jeff Beeson from Texas to provide an unmatched level of expertise in EMS. The NAEMSP course is on Sunday 13th of September and registration is available through our website. Register Now!

Global EM

DevelopingEM has, from the very first, had a focus on emergency medicine and critical care around the globe. Our sessions on global EM have been amongst the most interesting and enjoyable components of the last two conferences.

This year we have the IFEM President Jim Holliman coordinating an afternoon session on Tuesday September 15 to compliment the morning Cuban and Caribbean presentations.

Jim has gathered an amazing group of physicians to discuss their experiences around the globe, from Papua New Guinea to India and Vanuatu.

Jim will also be giving us an update on IFEM’s current activities.

Join us in Havana, Cuba to hear Jim’s team give some truly inspirational presentations.

As an example of what you can expect here’s Ravi Morchi’s incredible presentation on Essential Surgery in the Undifferentiated Medical Environment from DEM 2014.

One of the repeat components of the program this year will be the addition of a Lifelong Learning and Self Assessment session.
This session focussing on Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Literature Review will be an optional afternoon session on Tuesday 15 September.
The session will be conducted by Luis Lovato who is the Director of Critical Care at the Department of Emergency Medicine Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.
Luis is a LLSA specialist and has a monthly column in Emergency Medicine News entitled “Living with the LLSA” providing comprehensive reviews of required reading for members of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
DevelopingEM is excited about the return of the LLSA session and are very thankful for the involvement and expertise of Luis.
For an example of what to expect check out Luis’ session last year in Salvador here.
Stay tuned for more details of the best program DevelopingEM has ever put together.

EM in Cuba and the Caribbean

One of the core components of this years’ program will be delivered by our regional colleagues from Cuba and the Caribbean. The focus will be on how EM is developing in the region and also will review how our Cuban colleagues are assisting around with missions around the globe. Of particular interest will be the Cuban Response to Ebola in West Africa.

Our regional coordinators are some of the most respected physicians in the region and include Pedro Veliz and Carlos Perez from Cuba, Lisa Charles from St Lucia, and Regan Marsh from Mirabelais in Haiti.

As for all our core sessions we will have UN style translation during this part of the program. Our regional colleagues are as excited as we are to interact and discuss the challenges we all face in emergency medicine so make sure you come and support their efforts in hosting this session.

Yet another great reason to come to DevelopingEM 2015.

Register now and join us all in Havana.

An example of what to expect during this session is provided by the wonderful Ana Paula Freitas from Porto Alegre in Brazil. Check out her presentation from DevelopingEM 2014 here.

Anthony Crocco – Paediatrics

Anthony Crocco from Ontario has been a major part of DevelopingEM since 2013 when he presented in Havana.

In 2014 he coordinated an excellent paediatric program for us in Salvador.

This year he is arranging a multinational faculty for what will be another ground breaking Paediatric EM and Critical Care session.

He’s also a fantastic presenter himself and spoke to the audience at DevelopingEM 2014 about some critical practice changing paediatric articles.

Check him out here.
