Supporting regional delegates is a concept central to the ethos of DevelopingEM. It’s an idea that we applied to both our conference in Havana and in Salvador. In total we have fully sponsored the attendance of over 100 regional delegates in the last two years. This sponsorship has included support for attendance at the plenary sessions, optional workshops and social functions.

How it works: DevelopingEM has as its sole revenue source the contributions of its delegates. We use both your registration fees and your donations to fund the attendance of regional colleagues. This generally takes the form of complimentary registration for the conference but also has been applied to cover transport and accommodation expenses for those delegates travelling from particularly remote locations. During the registration process, delegates have the opportunity to contribute directly to assisting delegate sponsorship. With strict management of our finances, each 2 full paying delegates allows us to fully assist and support a regional delegate to attend.
Why? DevelopingEM’s conferences act as crucial mechanisms for the two-way exchange of information on topics of interest between critical care practitioners from around the globe. Without our sponsorship program many regional delegates would miss out on the experience of the conference as well as the opportunity to interact with and learn from colleagues from a range of critical care systems. It remains one of DevelopingEM’s priorities to promote these types of global interactions and we hope our sponsorship process is one way to expand this collaboration.

How to CaribEDel and make a contribution:
DevelopingEM accepts donations year-round for upcoming conferences. Here are two easy ways to contribute:
1. Register yourself for any upcoming DevelopingEM event. The simple act of your registration is crucial to the attendance of your regional colleagues.
2. Whilst you are registering you can elect to directly contribute to a number of donation options which include delegate sponsorship. Every extra dollar we receive means we can invite more local delegates. We look forward to seeing you in Cuba later in 2015.

One of our inspirations for the program was the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM) which has used its SupAdel program to sponsor the attendance of regional delegates to their annual events for the last five years. You can read more about their amazing system here

In a little over 3 months DEM heads back to Havana and we’re very excited with the program we’ve created and with the amazing faculty that are helping us this year.

We’re also looking forward to 2016 with plans to head to South East Asia and we need your help.

Since we first started it has been an aim of DEM to have a conference in Cambodia.

I think it was a country that entered my consciousness just as I was awakening to the fact that the world was bigger than my home town. The events of the late 70s were the first international crisis that I can remember as a child and somehow Cambodia has kept reappearing in my life.

Jodie and I have travelled there a few times and have been astounded by the beauty of the country, marveled at incredible Angkor and been overwhelmed by the wonderful Cambodian people. We even went there for our honeymoon.

We have a few contacts in critical care circles within Cambodia but we need more if we are going to have a successful event.

So if you DevelopingEMers know people who know Cambodia please let us know.

Of course there are other potential countries in the region where the DevelopingEM process could be of benefit so if you have any ideas please let us know.

Once again this year DevelopingEM will have accreditation for CPD /CME/MOPS with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM).

GDay DevelopingEMers.

In 2013 Jerry Hoffman, Lee and I (but mainly Jerry) penned a letter, on behalf of the delegate group from DEM2013, to Barack Obama imploring the US President to end the economic embargo of Cuba.

With the recent meeting between Obama and Raul Castro and the warming of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba perhaps Barack is listening to our delegates… perhaps.

Diplomacy is one thing, hard economic realities are another and it’s the continuing embargo that makes life difficult on a daily basis for our Cuban friends and colleagues.

Should we appeal as a group to the US Congress this time?

John MacKenzie rejoins us for DevelopingEM 2015
John has been an integral part of DevelopingEM from the beginning. Not only has he presented at all of our conferences but he’s also been central to the creation of the DevelopingEM FOAMed system.

In 2013 DevelopingEM donated five computer workstations, preloaded with emergency medicine and critical care educational material, to health centres in Cuba and St Lucia. John collated and produced the uploaded material for these workstations.

Similar resources were donated to Brazilian health centres in 2014 and once again John helped us create these devices.

John has also helped us record and produce material related to DevelopingEM presentations that has subsequently been used for our virtual registration packages and on this blog.

This year John will be returning to assist us once again to present on Life Saving Procedures during our trauma program

Chilean Emergency Physicians have been great supporters of DevelopingEM and we’d like to let you know about their annual national critical care conference Conceptos.

“CONCEPTOS” is a non-profit conference with a mission to provide quality education and training to emergency physicians throughout the region.

The aim is to provide practical, clinical evidenced based approaches to the delivery of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care through didactic education and workshops.

This is the fourth version of the conference and the main topics for this year will be Trauma and Critical Care.

The faculty is truly stellar with invited speakers including Joe Lex, Billy Mallon, Mel Herbert, Peter Viccellio, Scott Weingart, Rob Rogers, Stuart Swadron and Kenji Inaba.

The dates are: September 2, 3 and 4th 2015.

It will be held at the Catholic University of Santiago.

The conference has English-Spanish translation throughout.

We’ll be there, why don’t you come along too.

The Paeds Basic Course continues to expand its impact in the Caribbean

At DevelopingEM 2013 Elena Cavazzoni, a paediatric intensivist from Sydney, and one of our wonderful faculty, had a casual conversation with Lisa Charles from St Lucia about whether the Paeds BASIC course might be a useful training system for the region.

Within 12 months the course had been taken to St Lucia, Trinidad and Barbados and there are plans to return to the region very soon.

Over 100 doctors and nurses have attended the course which is provided by Elena and an incredible team of intensivists from around Australia.

It is amazing and humbling to think that because of DevelopingEM connections between two geographically remote regions have been forged and quality education delivered. Truly incredible.

Well it’s finally here, our complete program for DEM 2015.

Along with our core topics, Trauma, Paeds and Adult EM, we’ve got discussions on regional and global EM, and innovative workshops.

New this year will be site visits to Cuban health facilities which are likely to provide a fascinating insight into the Cuban health system.

Of course there will also be a tremendous social program where you will be able to connect with colleagues from around the world.

I didn’t think we could beat our group in Brazil but maybe we have.
