DevelopingEM teams up again with the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) to provide a pre conference workshop in EMS Medical Direction.
This interactive course focuses on EMS in the real world and serves to enhance physicians’ expertise in EMS issues.
Participants will receive a foundation upon which to function effectively as an EMS medical director, receive specific management tools that may be of use in their local EMS system, initiate dialogue with other EMS physicians to allow future networking, and develop an understanding of how EMS functions within the broader emergency care system.
Last years’ session brought together experts from around the globe and with the prehospital care delivery systems in Sri Lanka currently being established this is sure to be an enlightening workshop.

The burden of disease from poisoning in Sri Lanka, and throughout South Asia, is staggering—the number of severe poisonings and fatalities many times greater than in other parts of the world.
Given the importance of Toxicology as a specialty in Sri Lanka there was great interest in having a session dedicated to the topic.
Bob Schwaner from the US and Ravindra Fernando from Sri Lanka are co-chairing the session and bring a wealth of experience in the field of Toxicology.
Bob, is a colleague of Peter Viccellio at Stony Brook, and is board certified in both EM and Toxicology.
He has authored multiple book chapters, research and review papers, and monographs related to Toxicology.
Bob’s special interests in toxicology pertain to pain management and envenomation.
Ravindra is a Sri Lankan forensic pathologist, toxicologist, physician, author and academic.
He was instrumental in setting up the National Poisons Information Centre and is the current chairman of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board of Sri Lanka.
We are honoured to have their involvement in what will be a fantastic session, covering areas as diverse as organophosphate poisoning and snakebite and including audience interaction and discussion.
Complementing this session will be complimented by the Toxic Issues in the ED Pre ConferenceWorkshop hosted by Michael Downes an EP and Toxicologist from Newcastle in Australia.
This workshop, exclusively for our Sri Lankan colleagues, will explore key issues in Toxicology relevant to emergency medicine practice and will look at theory and evidence surrounding common pharmacological ingestions as well as snakebite and agrochemical related toxicity.

ELC / Toxicology / Nursing / CRM / Trauma workshops – open to local and regional delegates
After repeated suggestions from our delegate body, DevelopingEM organised site visits to health facilities in Havana during our conference last year.
It was one of the most popular activities we organised and our delegates got to see some of the internal workings of the Cuban health system first hand.
This year our Sri Lankan team is excited to be able to offer two optional small group tours.
The first will be an afternoon tour on Monday December 5 of two of the most important health facilities in the country, the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children
and the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
In the comfort of a modern air conditioned coach you will glide through the Colombo traffic to be met by a team of clinicians at each venue who will show you around these truly impressive facilities.
The second activity will be a whole day adventure to wonderful Galle on Friday December 9. Not only will you be shown the Teaching Hospital Karapitiya but there will also be a relaxed tour of historic Galle and surrounds.
The historic Galle Fort is truly a wonder of the Sri Lanka’s colonial past and the surrounding beaches are amongst the best in the country.
